Glaciers are flowing ice In 1827, a scholar built a stone hut on the Eagle Glacier in the Alps. Thirteen years later, it surprised many people that the hut had moved further down the glacier by 1,428 metres. Could the stone hut possess magical power? Scientists said that the hut couldn’t move by itself. In fact, the stone hut hadn’t moved – the glacier had. The hut had simply been moving down on top of the glacier. As this story vividly illustrates, glaciers are flowing ice, or what some people call ice rivers. |
