Source:Jeju Island Geopark, Korea Published:Mar 27,2014

Geofood is specialized food items inspired from geological features and culture of the geosights of Jeju Island Geopark, and made from local ingredients. Jeju conducted a Geofood Recipe Idea Exhibit in 2014, based on geological resources of Jeju Island Geopark. There was a good response from across the nation, with various sectors participating such as students, professors, cooks and housewives. Some thirty-eight recipes were submitted, and the Seongsan Ilchulbong fondant, Suweolbong sponge cake, cross-bedding cookie, columnar joint chocolate bar shared first prize. Jeju is trying to commercialize selected recipes through the contest, and has plans to prepare and publish standardized recipes to be offered throughout Jeju, after taking counsel from experts. There is a plan to merchandise standardized geofood recipes entitled to carry the brand name of Jeju Island Geopark to restaurants, cafes, companies and guest houses. Moreover, profits from this project can be returned to local society through business activity, and that will also help develop the local economy. Then, visitors can experience not only beautiful natural scenery when they visit the Jeju geosights, but also unique geofood.

Jeju Island Geopark held a modernized local geological festival in 2013, "Dotje (Jeju Festival of Pigs)", which was originally a traditional ritual at one of the better-known villages within Jeju Island Geopark. Also, Jeju Island Geopark is carrying forward a geogift business with special Jeju Geopark items.
