An E-classroom session was conducted for over 150 primary school students of Hong Kong Geopark on 17 June 2013.

The session involved not only Hong Kong and Itoigawa geopark, but also Aso Geopark, which is part of the Japanese Geoparks Network. It took place in Itoigawa City, which is the center of Itoigawa Global Geopark, and at the Aso Volcano Museum. Curators from both geoparks gave a talk on the special fault line in Itoigawa and the great caldera in Aso. The chair of Itoigawa Geopark also sent messages to the students. The Hong Kong students were very excited to “meet” the presenters from Japan and keen to ask questions! This was the first E-classroom conducted by the three geoparks together, and it has greatly aroused the students’ interest in geology.

After the session, Dr. Yeung Ka-ming, Senior Geopark Officer of Hong Kong Geopark, visited Itoigawa Junior High school and gave a talk to 158 students. In his talk he introduced the similarities and differences between Itoigawa and Hong Kong geoparks in areas such as geology and environment, and highlighted the friendship between the two geoparks, including the various exchange activities which benefited both geoparks. Several of the students will also be visiting Hong Kong this summer to join an annual exchange program between Hong Kong and Itoigawa. This will further enhance cooperation and international exchange between the two sister geoparks.
