Hosted by the Portuguese Government, the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) triennium (2007-2009) will celebrate a major closing event in Lisbon, Portugal, 20-22 November 2009. The celebration in Lisbon, entitled Planet Earth Lisbon Event 2009 (PELE2009) will summarize the results and legacies of the IYPE triennium and inform the audience on new initiatives emerging from the International Year.
UNESCO is one of the IYPE initiators, together with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). Apart from statements by Ministers from various countries and the Assistant Director-General of UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector, the Event Programme will address three themes: Renewable Energy, Sustainable Land & Water Management, and Oceans.
