FIRST CIRCULAR!

Convenors and Field-Trip Leaders: Bin HU, Guocheng ZHANG, Yong’an QI, Yiming GONG, Yongliang AI, Deshun ZHENG and Huibo SONG.

Objectives: This workshop is intended to bring together ichnological researchers to share developping ideas, processes and innovations in the area of ichnofabric research. Input concerning all aspects of this field of research will be welcome.

Location: Henan Polytechnic University, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, China.

Presentations: Invited talks, oral and poster presentations are planned. Panel discussions will be organised.

Field trips:

(1) Intra-meeting excursion to the Upper Carboniferous clastic-carbonate succession of the Taiyuan Formation and the associated Nereites missouriensis and Zoophycos ichnofabrics; Microbially-Induced Sedimentary Structures (MISS) in the Middle Proterozoic sandstone succession in the vicinity of Jiaozuo City.

(2) Post-meeting excursion to consider Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous outcrops of terrestrial deposits and associated trace fossils in the areas of Jiyuan and Nanyang, Henan Province and excursion to Xixia to see outcrops of the Majiacun Formation and the Sanlimiao Museum of Dinosaur Eggs (see Fig. 1).

(3) Post-meeting trip to Mount Emei, Sichuan Province, to see the Triassic littoral to tidal-flat deposits and the associated trace fossils (see Fig. 1).

Pre-registration deadline: February 15, 2009.

Pre-registration is important in organizing the IIW because it allows us to book appropriate conference rooms and hotels in Jiaozuo and facilities for the field trips. Please indicate your preferences on p. 3.

Abstract deadline: March 28, 2009.

Schedule:

August 23, 2009: arrive in Jiaozuo, Henan. Participants will be met at the Zhengzhou International Airport all day till 24:00.

August 24-26, 2009: presentations and posters with two half-day intra-meeting excursions guided by Guocheng ZHANG and Yong’an QI.

Field Trip 1 (details of trip subject to revision in the second circular)

August 27: selected outcrops in the Mesozoic Jiyuan Basin near Jiyuan City, Henan Province, 90 km to the west of Jiaozuo City.

August 28-29: Longmen Grotto and ichnofabrics in Ordovician epineritic Carbonates, Luoyang, Henan. Majiacun Formation, Xixia, Nanyang, Henan, 400 km to the south of Jiaozuo.

August 30: Sanlimiao Dinosaur Egg Museum and then head on to Xi’an, the ancient capital of China, about 250 km to the west of Xixia.

August 31: visit the Museum of the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Dynasty and the re-constructed old town of Chang’an. The meeting will finish in Xi’an, those who choose the field trip 2 will proceed to Mount Emei, other participants can arrange their return journey.

Field Trip 2 (details of trip subject to revision in the second circular)

(If less than 10 persons, the field trip 2 will be cancelled)

Sept.1: Fly to Chengdu City, the capital of Sichuan Province, and go to Mount Emei by a rented bus.

Sept.2: Selected outcrops of Triassic clastic-carbonate succession and the associated, well-preserved Psilonichnus upsilon, Diplocraterion habichi, Thalassinoides suevicus, Rhizocorallium irregulare, Palaeophycus isp. and other ichnofabrics, the Upper Cretaceous fluvial deposits and associated Scoyenia ichnofacies in the Mount Emei National Geopark.

Sept.3: Return to Chengdu in the afternoon. Field trip 2 finishes in Chengdu.

Tips: The weather in August is generally hot and dry at Jiaozuo and Xi’an, with high temperature ranging from 25° to 33° centigrade. At Mount Emei Area, it is commonly humid and rainy, with a high temperature of 30° more or less.

Conference Costs: THESE ARE ESTIMATES FOR THE TIME BEING.

Main Event: $280/230 or €180/150 (based on single/shared room occupancy, food and transportation included).

Field Trip #1: $310 or €200 (shared room occupancy, food and transportation included).

Field Trip #2: $260 or €165 (Flight NOT included; shared room occupancy, food and transportation included).

The Chinese currency is rising in value slowly. At present, the rate of exchange to US dollar is 6.8:1, and to Euro is about 10.5:1.

We are trying to obtain funding for this event. By January, we shall offer a final budget with hotel occupancy options: the cost to participants likely will be lower than shown above.
