Director-general Koichiro Matsuura of the UNESCO acclaims Mount Taishan as “gem of world heritage”

Accompanied by the general secretary of National Commission (China) of the UNESCO, Fang Maotian, the representative secretary of Beijing Office of the UNESCO, Li Jiangping, and other officials, the director-general of the UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura, surveyed Mount Taishan on August 5.

Taishan is the first world cultural and natural heritage in China and a global geopark, where the custom of Shigandang Belief, Taishan temple fair, Taishan Taoist music and Taishan shadow play have been among the list of national intangible cultural heritage. Taishan impressed itself on Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, “Visiting Mount Taishan is my desire over many years. I do it today. I will climb up the top from the foot directly next time.” He wrote down, “Mount Taishan as gem of world heritage”. “The primitive topography of Mount Taishan should be conserved well. Pleasantly, Mount Taishan intends to make a bid for the world intangible cultural heritage”, he continued with showing his deep concern for the protection and management of Mount Taishan and its bid to be the world intangible cultural heritage. In addition, he donated books and materials related to the world intangible cultural heritage to Taishan Management Committee.


Other companions included the deputy mayor of TaiAn Municipal People’s Government, Lin Huayong, the deputy general secretary of the People’s Government, Zheng Xiaoming, the deputy director of Taishan Management Committee, Lv Jixiang.
