Langkawi Geopark Carnival Begins May 30

Various events have been lined up at a three-day carnival in conjunction with the first anniversary of the Langkawi Geopark, beginning May 30.
Organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada), the carnival will be held at Dataran Lang in Kuah and the Mahsuri International Exhibition centre (MIEC) at Padang Matsirat.
Lada general manager Datuk Kamarulzaman Abdul Ghani hoped the carnival would be able to promote Langkawi as a world reknowned biodiversity and geological site to tourists.
Government agencies, tour and travel agencies and hotel operators will take part in an exhibition during the carnival, he said, adding that the highlight of the event would be a laser display on the development of Langkawi Geopark.
On tourist arrivals, he said 2.3 million tourists visited Langkawi last year as compared to 1.8 million the previous year.
Kamarulzaman said Lada expected the tourist arrivals this year to increase between 15 and 20 per cent, with the increase in tourists from East Asia and Europe.
