At a launch held at the Wells and Mendips Museum, the British Geological Survey (BGS) announced the publication of two brand-new geological maps and guidebooks that feature one of Britain's most popular and beautiful areas - the Mendips.

These new books, Exploring the landscape of western Mendip and Exploring the landscape of eastern Mendip are written for both tourists and local people who wish to know a little more about the region. They offer detailed geological maps of the area and a guidebook which describes the area's geology, landscape, flora and fauna. Understanding the local geology is key to finding out how the landscape came to look the way it does today, and how this influences everything from land-use to the local wildlife.

Dr Andrew Farrant, Project Leader and Regional Geologist at the BGS, said "The Mendip Hills have a fascinating geological history which influences everything from the present day landscape, its soils, plants and animals, to the patterns of industry and settlement. These maps and books are designed to make that fantastic geological heritage more accessible to everyone who lives on or visits the Mendips."

Dr John Powell, Chief Geologist of England at the BGS, added that these guides showed "geology and landscape at their best - a celebration of the Mendip Hills".
