A three-year drive to show off Torbay's best features is about to begin.
The granting of geopark status for the Bay is being greeted as another chance to demonstrate what the resort has to offer visitors seeking more than just a bucket and spade beach holiday.A concentrated three-year drive to bring geological activities under the English Riviera Geopark banner and showcase the coral sea and desert rocks which formed the Bay hundreds of millions of years ago is on the cards.
The Bay is the newest member of the European and Global Geopark Network.
The only urban one in the UK, it has to compete with the likes of the Brecon Beacons, the Malvern Hills and the North Pennines for custom.
Nick Powe, owner of Kents Cavern, said due to lack of recognition the resort has been bypassed by heritage tours up until now.
He said: "This status means anyone sitting in the United States or anywhere in the world in front of their computer can look at our website, see what we have to offer and say 'I would like to go there'."
He said it ties the Bay into big names like Agatha Christie, Charles Darwin and Beatrix Potter, who was photographed outside the cavern.
